Laycock Village Well-dressing 2008 Every notable well in medieval times was dedicated to a particular saint and if the water was found to be medicinal, its powers were attributed to the saint whose name it bore. This custom was very much alive in this area where there were a number of wells thought to have healing powers. On the saint’s day people would assemble to pay tribute and adorn the well with boughs and flowers. This was followed with music, dancing and ale drinking and was known as well-dressing. This is the long lost custom of the area that we hope to recreate on an annual basis at Gala time. Therefore, you are invited to dress the well outside Spring Cottage (next to the school) with a posy of flowers to celebrate the abundant local water supply that has played a great part in the survival of this village since before the Doomsday Book.
